"Win or be damned" It went trough my head before I knew I had to win -- or be damned. I was the only non-atheletic-club-member; a soloist. My spirit rode my body like a jockey on the back of a horse. Everything transcended into opportunity. Pain is only an indication of where potential for growth lies. Go trough it and you grow. It's a human law. It opens doors to slip into dark corners that otherwise remain closed. 

Because being the fastest that Saturday morning they gave me an award for it -- and that is the great thing about competitive sport: you win when you are the first to finish. Not, as in the arts or politics, because you have a way of charming the jury to award you (or annoying them and become an official looser). Winning in the arts, with all thou respect, is vulgar in a way. Like being appointed Buddhist Of The Year, or Employee of the Month. It's politics. Winning happens in the mind first. Screw awards -- excuse my French -- they merely tell the story of the people giving them away! Enjoy the game together. What Reinoud Eleveld (we spent two weeks with team and crew filming a Golf-pro training-camp in Portugal once) calls: The Spirit Of The Game.

Why are you showing the cup then in that slickly lit pack shot above; are you trying to impress?

Because from then, at that age (1982, 14 years at the time, the age of my oldest son now) what I remember is the chuckled look on the official's face while handing me the award at the price-ceremony afterwards. They didn't know who I was, where I was from. All others where decent paying members of a running club, decently dressed. I ran on normal shoes, my style must have been going against the status quo (which it has been ever since; generating quit a few laughs now and then -- which you get used to in a way -- focussing on what matters: having fun). It felt like having beaten something in how the system itself wants things to turn out. The winner is expected to come from within. 

What they didn't know was that I had trained for 3 or 4 years prior to that.

Breath is given, heartbeat what you make of it

Above: Half-way training at the IJmuiden South Pier, this morning. The ship¹ coming in is the passenger Vessel Saga Pearl II, from Cuxhaven Germany heading for Amsterdam.

Preparation for awesome wintertraining started these days! Discomfort is the best place to start. To prepare for worse (the winter) to come. To learn to adjust to discomfort creates:

a) Feeling of acceptance and well being with(in) the present circumstances (things can and will be a hell-of-a-lot-worse soon);

b) Prepares for what lies ahead as you built resiliency.

The best moment to start preparing for winter-training is... NOW.

How?

Easy does it. Look at adversity and discomfort as your coach. It shows you what needs to be learnt or you'll end up falling prone to finding excuses in it for not doing anything at all. Feeling a slight chill this summer? Don't panic and complain. Use it as a modest introduction to building up resistance and learn to deal with it: when it will get colder you will be much better prepared.

Remember that breath and breathing controls the heart beating. Every emotional-state has a corresponding breathing pattern². The reverse is true also. By introducing deep, relaxing breathing exercises, states of anxiety and its corresponding high heart rates will be brought within a reasonable zone.

To keep your well being within your reasonable zone is extremely important for your training to be effective, healthy and pleasant. You'll burn up and run out of breath soon other wise.

Breath is what is given, heartbeat what you make of it!

Your training should be designed to control that and the result will be that you will have fun.

Does that require fancy equipment attached to my arms to monitor my wellbeing?

If you are a robot or are part of a special program to become one: yes sure you do. In all other cases the less equipment, pretensions, high-tech stuff and fear based neurotic believes and superstition, the better of you are. Allowing you to fully concentrate on what you are doing; it introduces one to the essence of what is there and to make it stronger. Though this is not always a pleasant feeling to begin with; it is the best place to start (and go easy from there)!

In the name of the Father, and of the Zone, and of the Holy Spirit

If there is one climax to the whole bunch of training-sessions reported on this website over the past few years, it will be that at the Core of all anabolic¹ action there is balance; unity of time (conquered from passivity) and space -- the Zone.

Balance. Raising the bar, pushing the limits, though not violating them (which leads to exhaustion). From the bottom up: act, grow, energize. Respect and enjoy rest and recovery - trough meditation, breathing, sleep and balanced food intake (don't vegetate by sinking deep into the comfort-zone into catabolic² behaviour on an overdose of entertainment and snacks³). Out of the Zone = out of balance.

³ No news, TV and all that is not a bad idea at all. In fact it is a very good idea. It provides time and frees the mind of negative, fear based crap! Time to be given to training. Training in the Zone is done for the creation of unity, for the benefit of mankind. To merely consume the world trough the eyes of journalism and advertising is a waste of health mostly (an apology generator!) Trough training we develop looking at the world trough our own eyes. That is the real victory!
